Ready for 18 sits on The Big Picture in the Teen view. It lists nine steps that make turning 18 easier. Some finish on their own from your records or a lesson; others you mark done yourself. There are no deadlines.

Steps

  1. Open The Big Picture (opens in a new tab). The Ready for 18 card shows how many steps are done and what's Next.
  2. Open the card to see every step.
  3. Use a step's link, like Go to Assets or Start the lesson, to work on it.
  4. Choose Mark done on a step you finished yourself.
  5. Choose Not for me on a step that doesn't fit you. Choose Undo to bring it back.

The nine steps

  1. Open a bank account with a grown-up (done when you add a checking or savings account under Assets).
  2. Log a first paycheck (done when you add income under Income).
  3. Read a paystub (a lesson).
  4. Plan a month (a lesson).
  5. Build an emergency fund of $100 or more (done when a savings account under Assets holds it, or mark it done). From Kid Mode, only your keep-safe money counts, not your Save, Family Bank or Giving accounts.
  6. Keep or cancel each subscription on purpose (a lesson).
  7. Learn how credit scores work (a lesson).
  8. File (or understand) a first tax return (a lesson).
  9. Try one what-if (you mark it done).

How it works

  • Lesson steps finish when you finish that lesson in Learn. Most lesson steps can also be marked done if you learned it another way. The credit scores step finishes only with its lesson.
  • The bank account and paycheck steps finish only from your records. Accounts and allowance that came over from Kid Mode don't count, because jars aren't a bank and an allowance isn't a paycheck.
  • When all nine are done, the card says you're ready for 18.

FAQ

Is there a deadline? No. There are no deadlines, streaks or reminders. Go at your own pace.

Why can't I mark some steps done myself? A few steps finish on their own from your records or a lesson, like adding a bank account under Assets or finishing the credit scores lesson.

What does Not for me do? It moves a step that doesn't fit you out of the way. You can undo it any time.
