Pair a kid's tablet or open Kid Mode on your device

Kid Mode runs in a web browser on your kid's tablet, or on your own phone or computer for a while. Pairing gives a tablet its own key that only opens Kid Mode, so your Beyond Payday login never goes on it.

Before you start

• Kid Mode is on for at least one kid. See Set up Kid Mode.
• Your phone is signed in to Beyond Payday.
• The tablet is signed out of Beyond Payday. A tablet still signed in to your account can't get a code (it says to sign out first).

Steps

1. On the tablet, open a web browser and go to beyondpayday.com/kid. It shows a code and a QR code.
2. Scan the QR code with your phone's camera. It opens Pair a tablet in your account. Type the code the tablet shows under The code on the tablet and choose Next. No camera? On your phone, open your kid's row menu on the Family tab, choose Pair a tablet, type the code under No camera? Type the code, and choose Next. Only approve a code showing on a tablet you're holding. Never approve a code someone sent you.
3. Under Which kids use this tablet?, tick each kid who uses it.
4. Change Name this tablet if you like.
5. Choose Lock to (the button shows your kids' names). The tablet opens Kid Mode by itself in a few seconds.

Open Kid Mode on your own device

You can also hand your own phone or computer to your kid for a while:

1. On the Family tab, open your kid's row menu and choose Open Kid Mode on this device, or use the button on the kid's Devices tab.
2. Type your grown-up PIN (or pick one, the first time) and choose to open Kid Mode.

This signs you out of Beyond Payday on that device while your kid uses Kid Mode, so a kid never holds your login. When you're done, choose Grown-ups in Kid Mode, type your PIN, and sign back in.

How it works

• Codes are 6 letters and numbers, shown like ABC-234, and last 10 minutes. A code that runs out shows Get a new code on the tablet.
• Shared tablets: lock a tablet to up to 6 kids. It asks Who's using? before each kid unlocks.
• The tablet's key is kept only on the tablet. We store a scrambled copy, so the key can't be read back.
• Devices tab: your kid's page lists every device they're on. The grown-up who paired a device sees which week it was last opened. Choose Remove to stop a device right away; your kid's money and history stay.
• No notifications ever go to a kid's device. Every grown-up in your family gets an email when a tablet is paired, so a pairing nobody expected shows up.
• A paired tablet stays in Kid Mode: it can't sign in to Beyond Payday or open your account until a grown-up unpairs it with the PIN.

Good to know

• On an iPad, Guided Access keeps your kid in the browser. On Android, use Screen pinning or Family Link. Kid Mode keeps your kid inside Kid Mode, not inside the tablet.
• To take a tablet out of Kid Mode, choose Grown-ups on the tablet, type your PIN and choose Unpair this tablet.
• Devices that haven't opened Kid Mode for 90 days are unpaired on their own.
• Kid Mode and accounts for people under 18 work in a web browser, not in the Beyond Payday phone or Windows apps.

FAQ

Does pairing put my login on the tablet? No. The tablet gets its own key that only opens Kid Mode. Your Beyond Payday login never goes on it.

Why was I signed out after opening Kid Mode on my phone? Open Kid Mode on this device signs you out on that device, so a kid never holds your login. Sign back in when you're done.

How long does a pairing code last? 10 minutes. If it runs out, the tablet shows Get a new code.

Can one tablet be shared by several kids? Yes. Lock it to up to 6 kids. The tablet then asks Who's using? before each kid unlocks.

Do kid tablets get notifications? No. Kid devices never get notifications. Things that need you show on the Family tab and on your kid's page.
