Kid Mode has two views. The Little view is for kids who are starting to read: big pictures and buttons, and amounts made by tapping coins and bills. The Big kid view is for kids who read and type: typed amounts, a money rule, goals in order, and extras you can turn on. Both read aloud.
How it works
Little view (ages 5 to 7)
- Home shows My jars on a shelf, with I got money!, I'm buying something and Can I buy it?, what they're saving for, and a tip.
- Amounts are made by tapping coins and bills, never typed.
- Tabs: Home, My goals, What I did, Learn and Stickers.
- Unlock: 3 private pictures, picked the first time Kid Mode opens.
Big kid view (ages 8 to 12)
- Home shows My money, with I got money, I'm buying something and Can I buy it?.
- Amounts are typed. New money can split on its own by My money rule.
- Tabs: Home, Goals, Stats, Learn and More. More holds the wish list, What I did, Count my jar, Badges, Grown-ups and, when you turn them on, Jobs, Family Bank and Borrow.
- Unlock: a 4-digit PIN, picked the first time Kid Mode opens.
Only in the Big kid view: the job board, Family Bank, borrowing, the wish list with its wait, the money rule, monthly stats and the Game & gift-card money jar.
Kid Mode screens settings (the kid's Settings tab): Read aloud, Celebrations, Text size (Big kid view; Little screens are always large) and uses a screen reader (for VoiceOver or TalkBack: Kid Mode stops reading on its own, and lessons use screen-reader mode). The Sound button at the top of Kid Mode mutes everything on that device, lessons too. A lesson setting a grown-up changes during a lesson is kept for the next one.
An example
Maya is 6. Maya taps I got money!, taps a $5 bill and two quarters, and picks which jar it goes in. Leo is 10. Leo taps I got money, types $5.50, and Leo's money rule splits it into Save and Spend on its own.
Switch views
- In Settings, Family tab, open your kid's row menu.
- Choose Switch to the Big view or Switch to the Little view, then Switch.
You can also change View on the kid's Settings tab. Switching keeps everything: jars, goals, stickers, history and the unlock code your kid already has.
Assumptions and limits
- The suggestion comes from the birth month and year: the Little view under 8, the Big kid view from 8 to 12.
- Kids 13 and older can move up to the Teen view with their own login. See When your kid turns 13.
FAQ
Which view should my kid use? Kid Mode suggests the Little view under 8 and the Big kid view from 8 to 12. Pick whichever fits how your kid reads and counts.
Does switching views lose anything? No. Jars, goals, stickers, history and your kid's unlock code all stay the same, and you can switch back any time.
What happens to Big-only settings in the Little view? The Little view doesn't show the job board, Family Bank, borrowing or the Game & gift-card money jar.
