Quick setup is a short guided page, Set up, that gets your first income, bills, accounts and debts in so you can see what is left each month and your net worth. Each step saves when you continue, and a panel beside the steps updates as you type. Only the household owner sees it.

Before you start

  • New owners of an empty household land on Set up once from the dashboard.
  • You can reopen it from the Setup guide banner while income and bills are both empty, or by pressing Cmd+K and searching Quick setup.

Steps

  1. Under Money coming in, pick Taxes filed as, your state and Kids under 17, then add each source with a kind, an amount and how often. Choose Save and continue.
  2. Under Bills, add each bill with an amount and how often, or tap a quick-add chip such as Rent. The category is guessed from the name and you can change it. Choose Save and continue.
  3. Under What you have, add accounts, a home or a car. A retirement account named Roth IRA, IRA, 403(b) and so on is saved as that type; any other is saved as a 401(k). Choose Save and continue.
  4. Under What you owe, add cards and loans. A mortgage payment goes in Bills; its balance goes here. Choose Save and continue.
  5. The last screen, Here's where you stand., shows what is left each month and your net worth, with links to fine-tune the details. If you already had items saved before, it reads Here's what you added. and its numbers count only what you added in setup; your dashboard counts everything.

Choose Skip for now to move past a step without saving it (if you saved that step before, skipping puts back what was saved), Back to edit an earlier step, or I'll do this later to leave.

How it works

  • The panel uses the same math as the dashboard, so the numbers match once you finish.
  • The income kinds are Job, Self-employed, Social Security, Pension, 401(k) or IRA withdrawals, and Other. Child support, VA disability, SSI and workers' comp are not taxed; unemployment, disability insurance, rental income and alimony are taxed.
  • Filing status, state and kids under 17 are saved to your household tax profile. An estimated income-tax rate is filled in for Job and Self-employed income and can be changed later on the Income page. It comes from the same household tax estimate as the Income page, so it counts a pension, the taxed part of Social Security and the child tax credit.
  • With no state picked, state tax is left out and the page says so. States with tax brackets, like California, are figured from their brackets, the same as the take-home calculator; a state rate you saved on Income is used instead when you have one.
  • A row with an amount but no name gets a default name. A row with a name but no amount is left out.
  • Going Back and saving again updates the same items instead of adding copies.

Uncategorized bills

A bill you do not categorize is saved as Uncategorized. The dashboard shows how many bills need a category, and opening one in the bill editor lets you pick a category.

If you are an owner or spouse with AI access, the Bills step has an optional box, Let Beth sort bills I don't pick a category for. It is unticked by default. When ticked, only bill names are sent to Anthropic (Claude), never amounts, and Beth only fills in bills that are still Uncategorized.

Bills Beth sorted show a Sorted by Beth tag until you change or keep the category.

The one-time reminder email

If you create a household and add nothing for about a day, we send one short email with a Finish quick setup button. We send it once, and only if your household is still empty. To stop it, use the Unsubscribe link at the bottom of that email.

Good to know

  • Rent is its own bill category. The property rent category used for rental properties is labeled Property rent.
  • Child accounts never use the Beth option.
  • Nothing is required: you can leave at any point and add the rest on the Income, Bills, Assets and Debts pages.
