Beyond Payday is built around one household, not one login. As the account owner, you can add your spouse or partner, other adults, teens and kids as family members, then invite anyone 13 or older by email so they can sign in with their own account — all under your one subscription.

Before you start

  • Adding and inviting family members is an owner action by default. (You can extend it to your spouse — see Set permissions for family members.) Someone you extend it to can't invite anyone above their own role, and only you can set what an invited person will be able to do.
  • You can have one owner and one spouse or partner, plus any number of other adults, teens and kids.
  • Invites need an email address, and Beyond Payday won't send one to anyone under 13.

Steps

  1. Open Settings (opens in a new tab) and select the Family tab.
  2. Click Add a family member.
  3. Pick An adult, A teen (13–17) or A kid (under 13). The kid choice opens the Kid Mode setup instead of this form — see Set up Kid Mode.
  4. For an adult, enter their Name and pick Spouse or partner or Another adult (Spouse or partner isn't offered once you have one). A Birthday is needed for Another adult and must show 18 or older. For a teen, enter their Name and Birthday (13 to 17).
  5. Optionally enter their Email, then click Add Member. Saving with an email sends their login invite right away.
  6. To invite them later, open their row's actions menu and choose Send Invite. This needs an email on file, and never appears for anyone under 13.
  7. They'll get an email with a link to Accept Invitation, where they sign in or create an account to join your family.

How it works

  • Your choice sets their role: Spouse or partner becomes the spouse role; Another adult and A teen (13–17) become the child role, so with a login they see only their own items. The owner role belongs to whoever created the account.
  • If the birthday you type doesn't fit your choice, the form doesn't save. It offers the right one instead: Add as a teen instead, Add as an adult instead, or Set up Kid Mode instead for anyone under 13.
  • Invites are token-based links that expire after 7 days. If one expires, reopen the actions menu and choose Resend Invite — this issues a new link and resets the 7-day clock.
  • Revoke cancels a pending invite right away; you can send a new one afterward.
  • One Beyond Payday subscription covers everyone in your family — there's no per-person charge for family members.

Good to know

  • A family member doesn't need an email or an accepted invite to exist in Beyond Payday — you can add an adult or a teen with no email just to track their birthday for HSA and retirement calculations, or to set up a 529 or custodial account for them. They just won't be able to sign in. Kids under 13 are added through Kid Mode setup.
  • Invitations to anyone under 13 are blocked — Beyond Payday checks this against the birthday on their family member record, so enter it before sending an invite. For a child under 13, choose Add a family member, then A kid (under 13), to set up Kid Mode: their own jars, goals and lessons with no login. See Set up Kid Mode.
  • A family member aged 13 to 17 who accepts an invite gets the Teen view: the real app with plain subtitles and the Ready for 18 checklist. See How the Teen view works.
  • Child accounts have limited access by design: they only see their own items, and never see Snapshots, Milestones, Retirement, SHTF plan, the What-if planner, or Beth (the AI assistant), and they can't connect an AI assistant such as Claude or ChatGPT. A child also starts with no access to Save money or Money in and out — the owner can grant those two from Custom permissions, but not SHTF plan or the What-if planner. See Set permissions for family members for the full picture.
  • A spouse starts with Read and Update on SHTF plan, Save money, and the What-if planner, and Read on Money in and out, alongside the rest of a Full partner's access. View only keeps the whole household visible but blocks changes everywhere, including those tools — on the What-if planner, that shows as a "View only — changes aren't saved" bar on the page itself.
