A business in Beyond Payday keeps its money separate from your personal picture. Each business has its own income, expenses, assets, and debts, plus an entity type, owners with ownership percentages, and a valuation. This is a Pro feature (included in the 30-day trial).
An entity type is the legal structure of the business — such as an LLC, S-Corp, or sole proprietorship — and it affects how the profit is taxed.
Before you start
- Business tracking requires Pro. On the free plan, business-linked items are hidden behind "Upgrade to Pro" banners across your Assets, Bills, Debts, and Income pages.
- Each owner must already exist as a family member in your household so you can assign ownership.
Steps
- Go to Businesses (opens in a new tab) and click Add Business.
- On the General tab, enter the Business Name and pick the Entity Type (LLC, S-Corp, C-Corp, Partnership, Sole Proprietorship, or Other). Add the EIN (Tax ID), Industry, and Registered State if you have them.
- On the Valuation tab, choose Revenue Multiple, Profit Multiple, Asset Based, or Manual Valuation. For a multiple, set the Valuation Multiplier (it starts at 2.0); for Manual Valuation, enter an amount. You can change it later on the business's Settings page.
- On the Ownership tab, click Add Owner, pick a family member, and set each owner's ownership percentage. The total must equal 100%.
- Click Add Business.
- Open the business from the menu and use its Income, Expenses, Assets, and Debts pages to add items that belong to that business.
- Open the business's Settings page to refine details like the industry (searchable list), the registered state, and the full set of valuation methods.
How the numbers work
- Net profit is the business's revenue minus its expenses. An owner's own pay is never revenue: for an S-Corp, C-Corp, or partnership it counts as an expense; for a sole proprietorship or single-owner LLC it is a draw paid out of profit, not an expense.
- Pass-through income is that net profit flowing to the owners' personal taxes, which happens for LLCs, S-Corps, partnerships, and sole proprietorships. The Businesses page totals this in a Pass-Through card. A C-Corp is taxed on its own, so its profit is not counted as pass-through.
- Owner distribution is each owner's share of the net profit: net profit times that owner's ownership percentage. Two 50% owners each get half.
- Estimated value comes from your chosen valuation method — for example, annual revenue or net profit times your multiplier, or a manual amount. Each owner's share of that value is included in their personal net worth.
Good to know
- Personal and business stay separate. Your personal Assets, Bills, Debts, and Income pages don't include items you assigned to a business. Each business has its own Dashboard, Income, Expenses, Assets, Debts, and Settings pages.
- Business equity is managed in business Settings. The equity asset shown in an owner's personal net worth is generated from the business valuation. To set it directly, open the business's Settings page, choose Manual Entry as the Method, enter the Fixed Value, and save; change the generated equity asset's value from business Settings rather than from the personal Assets page.
- Split a shared bill by percentage. A bill like a phone plan or home-office rent can be split across businesses by percentage, with the rest staying personal. Set the allocation on the bill.
- Sole proprietorships don't use an EIN. Choosing that entity type clears the EIN field and assigns you as the single owner.
- Multiple businesses are supported. Add as many as you need; the Businesses page totals revenue, expenses, and pass-through income across all of them.
- Tracking here isn't legal separation. Recording a business in Beyond Payday keeps its numbers organized, but it doesn't create a legal entity or change how your business is registered.
