How the percentile is estimated
Your net worth is everything you own (cash, investments, retirement accounts, your home’s full market value, cars) minus everything you owe (mortgage, loans, credit cards). This tool compares that figure to what U.S. households in your age group are worth, using the Federal Reserve Survey of Consumer Finances (2022).
For example, a $300,000 home plus $50,000 in savings, minus a $200,000 mortgage, gives you $150,000 in net worth. Use the full home value when you also include the mortgage in debts; using home equity and then subtracting the mortgage would count that debt twice. Our guide to calculating net worth explains what else to include.
The Fed publishes the median and average net worth for each age band, but not a full percentile curve. We fit a standard distribution to those two published figures and read your percentile off it, so the result is a reasonable approximate band (“roughly the top 30–40% for your age”), not an exact official statistic.
Net worth naturally rises with age, so comparing within your own age group is far more useful than comparing against everyone. Being below the median early on is normal — what matters is the trend over time.
