What your kid learns

  • Find the price

Look for the price tag. It shows what the thing costs.

  • Make the price with coins

Pick coins that add up to the price. Two dimes and a nickel make 25¢. A quarter is 25¢, too.

  • The seller checks

The seller counts your coins. Then you get the thing. Sometimes you get a receipt, too.

  • Now it’s the store’s money

After you pay, the store owns the money.

The story: Jo shops, then sells

In a pretend shop, Jo pays 15 cents with a dime and a nickel for a toy car, then plays the seller and checks a grown-up’s coins.

  1. Helper: Hi there! Welcome to the Coin Crew Shop.
  2. Jo: I want the toy car. How much is it?
  3. Seller: The toy car is 15¢.
  4. Helper: Jo picks a dime and a nickel. That makes 15¢!
  5. Seller: That’s the price. Here is your car and a receipt.
  6. Helper: Now Jo is the seller! A grown-up wants the ball.
  7. Jo: You gave me one dime. That is 10¢. It matches!
  8. Helper: Make the price, then pay. Now the money belongs to the store.

Talk about it

If something cost 15¢, which coins could you use to pay?

Try it at home: Play store

  1. Play store with paper coins. One of you buys. One of you sells.
  2. Make the price with coins, then pay.
  3. At a real store with a grown-up, you can hand over the money.

No coins at home? Cut coin circles from paper and write 1¢, 5¢, 10¢ or 25¢ on each.
