Lesson outline
The big idea: Systems beat willpower, so set up your accounts so good habits happen on their own.
The story: Alex wires up a first paycheck
Alex sets up a first paycheck so a slice goes to savings, bills pay after payday, and phone alerts keep watch.
- Narrator: Alex just started a full-time job. Last summer, saving happened only when Alex remembered.
- Alex: This time I don’t want to rely on willpower.
- Narrator: Alex splits the direct deposit. Most goes to checking, and a slice goes straight to savings.
- Narrator: Bills go on autopay a few days after payday. A buffer in checking keeps autopay from overdrawing.
- Narrator: Alerts flag low balances and big charges. Once a month, Alex has a money date to check it all.
- Alex: Set it up once, then just check it.
- Narrator: Set it up once, check it monthly.
What you’ll learn
Split the deposit
Many jobs let you split direct deposit between accounts. Sending a slice straight to savings means you save before you can spend it. That’s paying yourself first, on autopilot.
Autopay, with a buffer
Autopay pays bills on time without you remembering. For a credit card, many people choose the full balance. A buffer in checking keeps a low balance from causing fees. So does opting out of debit card overdraft coverage.
Alerts and a calendar
Alerts can flag low balances, big charges and due dates. A bills calendar shows when money comes in and goes out, so autopay can land after payday.
A monthly money date
Once a month, check balances, upcoming bills, savings goals and subscriptions. Cancel what you don’t use. About 15 minutes keeps the whole system working.

Common questions
- What if my income changes from week to week?

Remember this
Set it up once, check it monthly.
Try it: Draw a money flow
- Draw the sample worker’s money flow: paycheck → checking and savings → bills → goals.
- Or draw your own, with any money you get.
- Mark which arrows could happen automatically.
