Lesson outline
The big idea: A tax return settles what you owe or are owed for the year. Filing can pay you back even when you earned little.
The story: Jade’s first return
Jade sorts tax forms at a kitchen table while Ana, a friend, explains why filing can bring money back.
- Narrator: Jade earned a little last year from a campus job and some delivery gigs. Tax season is here.
- Jade: I didn’t earn much. Do I even need to file?
- Ana: Maybe. Gig income can mean you have to file. And tax was held back from your campus paychecks; filing is how you get it back.
- Narrator: Whether you must file depends on income and filing status. Filing anyway can return withheld tax or claim credits.
- Jade: My parents might claim me as a dependent. We need to agree on that before anyone files.
- Narrator: Jade gathers a W-2 from the campus job, a 1099 from the gig app and a 1098-T for tuition.
- Ana: The IRS lists free ways to file each year, and VITA volunteers help for free too.
- Narrator: Every form first, then free filing if you qualify.
What you’ll learn
What a tax return does
A tax return adds up your income for the year and figures the tax you owed. Tax already held back from your pay counts toward it. If too much was withheld, you get a refund. If too little, you owe the rest.
File even if you don’t have to
Whether you must file depends on your income, filing status and age. Net gig income of $400 or more means filing is required. Filing anyway can get back withheld tax and claim credits for people who work. The IRS has a free tool to check.
Gather every form first
A W-2 shows job pay and tax withheld. A 1099 shows other income, like gig or contract work. A 1098-T shows tuition paid, and a 1098-E shows student loan interest. Waiting until every form arrives saves redoing the return.
Dependents, free help and the deadline
If parents could claim you as a dependent, agree on it before anyone files. Free filing options change every year (see the card), and VITA volunteers help many people for free. File on time, even if you can’t pay it all yet.
