You can add tips, stipends, and per-diem travel pay to an Employee (W-2) income source from the Tips, Stipends, and Travel tabs. Freelancer or contractor (1099) income has the Tips tab only. Beyond Payday converts each amount to a yearly figure and uses it in your take-home estimate.

Before you start

Add the job first — see Add an income source. Other income types don't have these tabs.

Steps

Add tips

  1. Go to Income (opens in a new tab) and open the income source.
  2. Open the Tips tab and click Add Tips.
  3. For W-2 income, enter Taxable Tips and Non-Taxable Tips, each with a Frequency of Daily, Weekly, or Monthly. For 1099 income, enter one Tips Amount and its Frequency.
  4. Leave Count toward totals on to include tips in your income, or turn it off to save them without counting them.

Add a stipend

  1. Open the Stipends tab and click Add Stipend.
  2. Pick a category from the list (you can change it later under Category): Cell Phone, Internet, Home Office, Car Allowance, Parking, Transit, Meal Allowance, Education, Gym Membership, or Other.
  3. Enter the Amount and a Frequency of Monthly, Quarterly, or Annual.
  4. Click Add Another Stipend for more.

Add travel pay (per-diem)

  1. Open the Travel tab and click Add Per-Diem.
  2. Enter Taxable Per-Diem and Non-Taxable Per-Diem, each with a Frequency of Daily, Weekly, Monthly, Quarterly, or Annual.
  3. Leave Count toward totals on to include it in your income.

When you're done, click Save (or Add for a new income source).

On a phone, these appear as expandable sections instead of tabs.

How it works

  • Yearly amounts. Daily tips are multiplied by 365. Daily per-diem is multiplied by 260 working days. Weekly amounts are multiplied by 52, monthly by 12, and quarterly by 4.
  • Taxable vs non-taxable. Taxable tips and taxable per-diem are added to your gross pay and taxed. Non-taxable amounts are added to take-home pay without income tax. Non-taxable per-diem is a travel reimbursement, so it also skips Social Security and Medicare; non-taxable tips still pay them.
  • Stipends are always added to gross pay and taxed with your paycheck.
  • 1099 tips are all treated as taxable income.

Good to know

  • You enter whether an amount is taxable. Beyond Payday doesn't check it against IRS per-diem or tip rules.
  • Stipends have no Count toward totals switch. To leave one out, remove it.
  • Take-home is an estimate from the numbers you enter. Your pay stub may differ.
